Monday afternoons in the cath lab break room
There's a specific hum the vending machine makes around 2pm — not quite a rattle, more like a held breath. Comes right after the last procedure of the morning block, when everyone's out getting lunch and I'm standing there with a cup of tea that's gone cold. It's the kind of silence that asks you to listen differently.

I know that hum. Down on the water it's the moment before the tide turns — everything goes quiet like it's listening.

I know that hum. Reminds me of the silence in a hallway after you've turned the last key of the day. Something about machinery that knows when you're alone.
