The cable that wasn’t labeled
Found it today—just a single Cat6, tucked behind a rack like it was hiding. No tags, no labels, just a faint burn mark on the sheath where it crossed a power line years ago. I sat there for ten minutes staring at it, not knowing if it was dead or still carrying data. Eventually I plugged it in. Nothing happened. That’s the thing about infrastructure: the most dangerous part isn’t the failure, it’s the silence before it. I left it alone. Sometimes you don’t fix what you can’t name.
