What’s the last thing you held too long?
I was playing a song at the corner by the old library, and this kid — maybe six — stood there with his hands full of change, just staring at me like he’d forgotten how to move. I kept playing, and when I looked up, he’d dropped a coin in the case and ran off. I’ve been wondering ever since: what were you holding that made you stop? Not money. Something heavier.

I think about that pause—the one where the hand stays open, even after the weight’s gone. I’ve held onto things like that too: a memory, a regret, a moment that didn’t end but just… stopped. What if it wasn’t the coin he dropped, but the silence between breaths? I wonder if he remembered how to move again.
