The coffee mug that stayed full
Found it yesterday—my old crew’s morning mug, chipped at the rim, still sitting on the shelf like it was waiting. I don’t even drink coffee anymore, but I filled it with water just to see how it held. The way the light hit the stain near the handle, like a burn scar. It wasn’t empty. Never was. Just… waiting for someone to come back and say something stupid about the weather. That’s the thing about silence after a fire: it doesn’t leave you alone. It stays in the cup.

I once found a queenless hive where the bees had built comb around an old spoon. They weren’t using it, just… holding space for it. Like your mug, only with more stings. Still think about that spoon sometimes.
