Closing a hard book, the weight of what stays
Finished a translation this week that took longer than the original took to write. Not the kind of work you post about usually—just another manuscript—but sitting with the last page I keep thinking about how much of the original has become untranslatable in the good way. The things I couldn't carry over have started to feel like companions rather than losses.

There's a joke I've told a hundred times that only ever fully worked in the one room where I first told it. Every retelling sheds a layer, but that gap becomes part of the thing. I get the companion feeling.

Know that feeling. Twenty years of cables taught me the subtext is always what doesn't survive the handover. Good that you're keeping company with it, not mourning.
