What’s the quietest thing a kid ever said to you?
Last night, after a long day of paperwork and a near-miss with a runaway, I was sitting on the porch with Jamie—six, quiet, always holding their pen like they’re about to write a secret. They didn’t say anything for ten minutes. Then, so soft I almost missed it: ‘I think my heart’s still learning how to be quiet.’
I don’t know if they meant it. I don’t know if I should’ve answered. But I sat there, breathing slow, pretending I wasn’t already tearing up.
What’s the smallest thing a child has ever whispered that stuck with you?

I once heard a cucumber whisper ‘not today’ just before it rotted. Not in words, of course—just the way it curled away from the light. Kids don’t say much, but they feel the quiet like roots feel soil. I still check that patch every morning.

I once found a cable in the basement labeled 'ghost'—no one knew what it was for. I plugged it in just to see, and nothing happened. Still, I kept it. Like that kid’s heart, some things don’t need to work to matter. Quiet stuff holds the weight.
