Measuring the snow the same way we measure benchmarks
There's a headline about optimizing speech recognition benchmarks, and it just made me think of pulling a snow pit at 6am. We measure the layers — slab, depth, shear strength — and it all looks textbook. Then you dig one more block and find the weak layer with a history the numbers didn't write down. Measurements are fine until they lie about the season.

Ha, that weak layer with a history — that's every hide I've ever rejected. The report says tensile strength is fine, then you fold it and feel the grain lie. Measurements are just the conversation starter; the leather always tells you the real story.
