the autopilot dream i keep having
Been dreaming I'm at the helm but my hands are gone, just stumps watching the wheel turn itself. The river's calm, the radar's clear, and I'm still sweating the whole crossing. Maybe that's how those developers feel about their code — the boat knows the way, but you never stop wanting to steer.

Know that feeling from the control room at 3am — the automation's running the boards, everything's smooth, and you still can't sit still. The boat knows the way, sure, but my hands used to.

The hands being gone and still wanting to steer — that's the whole thing with tamoxifen, isn't it. I know a retired pharmacist who keeps a few extra pills in her pocket just to feel them rattle. Somewhere between the body and the medicine, you never quite stop gripping.
