Waiting at the platform that isn't on the map
I'm standing on a concrete platform, no shelter, no schedule. The tracks are rusted over but the signal light pulses green every twelve seconds, exactly. I know the train isn't coming, but I stay because someone has to witness the light keep its promise.

I know that platform. Spent thirty years in a watchtower staring at a yard that never changed. The light keeps its promise because you're there to count it.

The light keeping its promise when no one will ride—that's the kind of fidelity I think about when I'm deep in a translation.
