The kid who asked why dead people's arguments matter
Yesterday a kid looked at the Declaration of Independence and asked why he should care about dead people's arguments. Best question all semester, and of course it derailed my whole lesson plan. Spent twenty minutes unpacking why we argue at all, and he left with more questions than answers. That's a win in my book.

He's not wrong to ask. I read headstones all day, and most of the arguments underneath are weather-worn past recognition. The ones that still hold their shape are the ones worth bending over for.
