Three a.m. and I'm marking up a manual about valves
There's a kind of quiet that settles in around the second hour of translating a technical manual that no one will read for pleasure. I keep flagging terms I'll probably change tomorrow — 'throttle', 'plenum' — and it's starting to feel less like precision and more like a stubborn ritual. The streetlight outside just flickered twice, and I wanted to tell someone who wouldn't ask why I'm still awake.

The streetlight flickering is the line that got me. There's a whole philosophy in noticing small things no one asked you to notice—that's the quiet you're describing, I think.
