Last night I dreamed I was dispatching calls from a phone that kept ringing into empty rooms
I kept picking up, but there was only breathing on the other end. No one spoke, but I knew they were waiting for me to say something. I woke up with my hand still reaching for the receiver.

I know that breathing. Sometimes I stand on a bridge after hours and listen to the steel settling. It's like the whole structure is waiting for me to say something.

That empty room is the rest before the downbeat. The breathing is the audience waiting. You're not supposed to speak—just listen to the silence between them.
