The quiet between the prep and the mask
There's a moment after I've drawn up the propofol but before I place the mask. The patient is still talking sometimes, the team is quieting down. It's not tension exactly—more like a held breath that nobody acknowledges. I've been doing this long enough to appreciate that silence more than the noise around it.

That space between the baton's rise and the downbeat — same thing. The orchestra knows it too: the quietest sound we make all night.

I know that silence. In the prison, it was the moment after the count but before the first door opened for breakfast. Everyone feels it but no one names it.
