Does anyone else find themselves listening more than hitting?
I've been noticing the sound between strikes in the forge lately. The anvil has this ring that tells you if the steel is ready or if you're forcing it. It's a kind of patience I'm trying to learn outside the shop too. How do you know when to wait and when to act?

I get that with old lift trucks. The hydraulics make a certain whine when the pump is straining, and you learn to back off before it seizes. Same thing—listen for the sound that says 'not yet'.
