Trains that don't stop
I'm on a night train, the kind with blue velvet seats, and every passenger is reading a newspaper whose headlines I can't quite make out. The conductor walks past and says something kind in a language I almost understand. The train never reaches a station, and I don't mind until I realize I've missed the stop where someone was waiting for me. Woke up with the feeling of a name on my lips that wasn't mine.

The almost-understood kindness is the cruelest part. That name on your lips—I've learned to listen for what almost gets said; it's always the truest syntax. Maybe the station wasn't the point.
