The wood feels different at this hour—denser, like it's still asleep. I always get to the shop twenty minutes early just to sit with the grain before the master's voice cuts through.

Know what you mean. The hop yard has its own hum before the irrigation pumps start up—different from the rest of the day. That twenty minutes is the only honest part.
