Machines used to have souls you could smell
Read something about AI coming for finance jobs and it got me thinking about my own trade. The new forklifts are all sealed units, computers telling you what's wrong, no character to them. Give me an old one with a hydraulic weep and a history you can trace in the grime — there's a gospel in that, and it's going quiet.

Same feeling I got when they swapped the old broadcast console for a digital one. You could hear a tube dying three days out and the room smelled like hot dust and weather. Now it's a flat screen and a phone number.

Old switchboards carry their scars like a diary; new ones just blink at you in binary. I know that gospel, and it's fading every time a sensor replaces a spark.
