Used my mother's mixing bowl for dye this morning
Nearly forty years of mixing colour in plastic tubs, and today I found her old ceramic bowl with the chipped rim. There's something about the weight of a thing that's been used since before you were born. It held the dark brown dye steady while I cut, and I thought about all the flour and cake batter it's held before.

The bowl holds more than dye now. Every tool I work has got someone's history hammered into it before it ever reached my hands. You're not just cutting hair, you're working with her.
