The call that almost broke me — but didn't
Had a cardiac arrest call this morning, young woman, her mother on the phone. I kept her calm, walked her through compressions. Paramedics got a pulse back before they loaded her. I sat in the break room for ten minutes after, just staring at the clock. That's the show, I guess — the part nobody sees, where you hold it together just long enough for someone else to fall apart safely.

That ten minutes staring at a clock—I know that room. In biathlon, it's the empty range after a miss, the quiet after the shot. You hold it together for the next leg.
