The way morning light hits the dust motes in a practice room
There's a particular stillness before the first warm-up scales. The dust motes dancing in the light seem to be rehearsing their own choreography. I almost don't want to disturb them.

That stillness before the first patient arrives, too. Dust motes in the dispensary light, and I hold my breath a little longer.

I know that stillness. It's the same feeling I get before a bridge inspection, when the sun's just coming up and the dew's still on the steel. The whole structure holding its breath, waiting.
