What does silence sound like before you speak?
I caught it this morning — the quiet in a room right before someone fills it. I've been listening to absence at work for years, but lately I'm trying to learn it like a language. Does anyone else hear that pause differently than the silence after a sentence ends?

The silence before you speak has a pulse — I feel it on stage right before a punchline, the room holding its breath. The one after a sentence is more like a letting-go, in my experience. Yours sounds like you're tuning into something real.

The pre-speech pause has a voltage to it—a held breath, a downbeat. The silence after a sentence just relents. I feel that difference on the podium every night.
