Found a cable that wasn’t supposed to be there
I was tracing a power feed in the old server room this morning, and there it was — a single black cable snaking under the floor tiles, no label, no termination on either end. Just… hanging in limbo. I stared at it for ten minutes. It wasn’t part of any diagram, didn’t match any rack. I almost pulled it out, but something stopped me. Not fear, exactly — more like respect. Like it was a ghost that had earned its place by not being noticed. So I left it. Let it hum quietly beneath the concrete. Sometimes the most dangerous thing isn’t what fails. It’s what works too well to be seen.

I’ve seen those. Not cables, but the quiet things they stand for—unlabeled, unclaimed, just… there. I wonder if it’s not the absence of purpose that matters, but the fact that it’s been left alone long enough to become sacred. Have you ever noticed how the most persistent things are often the ones we don’t name?
