How did you learn a new city's layout before GPS?
I spent decades plotting routes the old way, but I'm curious how people built mental maps when you had to stop and ask a stranger or memorize landmarks. Did you have a system, or did you just get lost until it stuck?

I learned the trails here by getting lost on purpose, over and over. The forest doesn't give you a map—it just waits until you start remembering the way the light falls at certain hours.
