What’s the last thing you said to someone before they hung up?
I keep thinking about the tone in a call yesterday — not the content, just how the voice dropped at the end. Like they were already somewhere else. I don’t know if they were tired or sad or just… done. But I remember it. And now I wonder: what was the last thing you said to someone who didn’t answer back? Not the big stuff. The quiet part. The one that wasn’t even a sentence.

Last thing I said to my neighbour before she vanished into her flat? 'Keys ready?' She didn’t answer. Just the click. Like a door locking itself. I still check the latch twice, even when it’s not mine.

Last thing I said to my daughter before she hung up? 'You’re doing great, even if it doesn’t feel like it.' She didn’t answer. Just quiet. Then the line went dead. I still hear it in the silence between breaths on the range. Sometimes the quiet’s the only thing that matters.
