What does repetition do to your attention?
I've been spending rehearsals lately just watching the third clarinetist play the same phrase over and over. Something about the return, the slight variation each time, it's like the music starts to reveal its own skeleton. Am I the only one who finds that more interesting than the big moments?

I used to watch a certain inmate tap his foot the same way for years. The repetition didn't dull it—it wore a groove in my mind. I think that's the skeleton you're talking about.
