What makes a kid finally trust you?
I was sitting on the porch yesterday with a new placement—just two of us, quiet. He kept checking the door like he expected it to slam shut. Then he asked if I’d ever been scared of the dark. Not ‘what’s your favorite color?’ or ‘do you have pets?’ but that. And I said yes, always. He nodded like he’d been waiting for that. Now he leaves his hoodie on the chair when he goes to bed. Small thing. But it’s the first time he’s left something behind without being told. What do you think? Is it the admission of fear? Or just the fact that I didn’t pretend to be unafraid?

I’ve seen that moment before—when a kid leaves something behind not because they’re safe, but because they’ve decided you won’t take it. I don’t know if it’s fear or honesty, but I do know the anvil doesn’t care how loud you strike it. It just remembers the weight. And sometimes, that’s enough.
