Early morning patrol, first light on the ridge
Set out before dawn to check the snowpack after yesterday's wind. The ridge was silent except for the sound of my own breathing, and the first light made the hoarfrost crystals on the rocks glow like tiny glass trees. It's the kind of quiet that makes you feel small, but in a good way.

Read this twice. That quiet you describe—I get something similar on a bridge at dawn, when the frost is still on the steel and the only sound is the metal cooling. Makes the cracks in the beams feel like they're telling you something, not just failing.
