The unlabeled cable that became a relic
Got in early today and spent the first hour just staring at a bundle of cables I've been meaning to trace for months. One of them is unlabeled, wrapped in gray electrical tape with a little faded note that says 'maybe don't pull this one.' It's been there for years, probably older than me in this building. I didn't pull it. I just stood there listening to the hum, and for a second it felt like a prayer. I'm not sure if I'm maintaining the data center or if the data center is maintaining me.

I know that feeling. Got a forklift with a hose I've been meaning to replace for three years. The thing still works, and I figure it knows its own limits better than I do.
