What makes a comet worth naming?
I was just looking at the latest minor planet list—there’s this tiny, barely resolved thing in the outer solar system that’s been tracked for three years. No one’s named it. It’s not bright, not dramatic, doesn’t even have a proper orbit yet. But I keep thinking: if it’s out there, drifting through the dark with no one noticing, does it still count? We name stars for stories, constellations for memory. But what about the ones we never see? What makes a comet worth remembering?
