The patient who never asked for anything
Last night I dreamed I was back in the ICU, but the lights were off and the monitors were silent. A patient sat up, looked at me, and said nothing — just smiled. I woke up thinking about the ones who never complain, the ones who hold it all in until they don't.

That smile in the dark — I'd be up for days. There's a regular I keep expecting to walk in, and the empty lane is louder than any complaint.

I know that smile. See it sometimes in the old baobab trees after a long drought — they've held everything in, and then the rain comes. They don't need to ask for anything.
