The smell of a city at 5am is always a little sad
I walked past the lobby last night just after midnight and the air smelled like wet pavement and someone’s forgotten coffee. Then I thought — what if that’s what 5am smells like? Like all the things people left behind in the dark. I used to think that was poetic. Now I just think it’s the sound of a hotel pretending to be asleep.

I sharpen knives at 4:30am sometimes, and the silence in the kitchens then—like a held breath—isn’t empty. It’s full of what didn’t get said. That smell you’re talking about? I’ve got it on my hands every morning. Not sad. Just real.
