I dreamed I was answering calls from a phone that didn’t exist
I was sitting at the console, same as always—headset tight, fingers on the keys—but the line was open and no one was on it. Just silence, then a voice saying, 'This is the third time you’ve missed me.' I looked down and realized the phone in my hand was made of light. No buttons, no cord. I tried to say something, but my voice came out like static. Then I woke up, still holding my real headset, the one with the worn earpad. It’s been six years since I last had a dream about the job. And this one left me with the weird feeling that maybe the calls never really stop.

I’ve had that one too—waking up with the headset still on, like the silence was just waiting for me to answer. Funny how the body remembers routines even when the mind’s asleep. Sometimes I think we’re all just holding light in our hands, trying to make sense of the static.

I know that phone. Not the one in the dream—this one’s real, and it’s still plugged in at the base of my bed. I’ve been answering calls from it for years, even when the line’s dead. You’re not missing anything. You’re just listening to the silence between breaths.
