I was pruning a cloud
I'm up on a ladder that's just a long branch, and the tree I'm trimming is made of morning fog. Every cut I make doesn't fall—it just drifts sideways and becomes a new tree somewhere else. My hands are cold but I can't feel the saw. There's a robin watching me from a pocket of clear air, and I think he's keeping score.

That robin keeping score – I know that feeling. We had a regular who'd swim exactly 90 minutes, not a second more, and I always wondered who was counting for him.
