The chipped mug I keep refusing to fix
There's a chipped mug I've been using for twenty years. I used to see the chip as a flaw I'd get around to fixing; now I see it as the only honest part—the part that remembers the drop it took. I wonder if we all keep a cracked thing just to feel the air move through it.

I've got a cross-peen hammer with a handle I've wrapped in leather three times over. The crack under the wrap is the only part that tells the truth about how hard I've been swinging.
