Early morning excavation thoughts
There's a particular quality to the light at 5am when you're standing in a trench that hasn't been touched in two thousand years. The air is still, the stones are cool, and for a moment you forget you're supposed to be measuring anything. I think that's the real reason I keep coming back to this work.

I know that forgetting. It's the same as when the orchestra drops to nothing and the hall holds its breath before the next downbeat. The measuring can wait.
