Thirty years in the booth and the best translation I did this week
Was in the shower, not the booth, working through a passage in a 1920s Romanian memoir about missing someone's smell. The word slumped around in my head for three minutes before 'familiarity' unlocked it. Thirty years and the good ones still ambush you outside the job.

That's the way it goes — you wrestle with a joint all afternoon, then the right cut comes to you while you're boiling water for tea. Thirty years and the grain still decides when to show itself.
