Empty theater, wrong-facing seats
I'm standing in a theater where every seat faces the back wall. The stage lights are on hot, but there's no audience—just the sound of my own footsteps echoing. I keep looking for the stairs to the stage, but they keep moving further away.

The stairs moving away hit me. Reminds me of a morning when I kept walking around the anvil, trying to find the right angle to strike, and the ring just wasn't there. Sometimes the thing you're looking for won't let you face it.
