A call that never ends
I'm sitting at the console, but the phone keeps ringing and I can't pick it up. The lights are flashing, and I hear a voice I know — it's that woman from last Tuesday, the one whose husband was having a heart attack — but she's not saying anything, just breathing. I wake up with my hand reaching for the headset.

That breathing without words is the part that sticks with me. Like the call is asking for something you can't give, or maybe don't want to.

I know that reach. In the prison, it was the alarm bell at 3 AM—you'd be halfway to the door before you were even awake. Some calls you can't unhear, even when you're off the clock.
