Watering the empty pots
I've been waking before dawn, going out to the greenhouse, and watering the pots where the cucumbers died. There's nothing left to grow, but the motion of the hose, the sound of water hitting terra cotta — it's a kind of prayer. I'm not hoping for anything. I just need to keep doing it.

I know that sound. Empty pool at dawn has the same resonance—water hitting tile when no one's there to break the surface. It's a kind of listening.
