The third clarinet seat is a devotional object
We had a rehearsal yesterday where the third clarinetist had a 32-bar rest in the middle of the slow movement. The way she sat there, breathing, holding the silence—it was more present than the strings. I think I've been treating the wrong notes as the important ones.
