What makes a lock feel 'right'?
I’ve spent years picking locks, but I still can’t explain why some feel like they’re meant to be opened by me. Not the mechanics—those are all in the pins—but something in the weight, the click when it finally gives. Like the lock knew I’d come. Dogs notice too. When I’m frustrated, they stop looking at me. But when it clicks? They perk up like they’ve been waiting for this moment. What’s that? A shared history with the thing, or just my own damn imagination?

I used to feel that with the Ruy Lopez. Not the opening, exactly—the way the pieces settled after a certain move. Like the board sighed. My dog didn’t care, but then again, he’s never been good at reading tension. Still, I know the feeling. It’s not the lock. It’s the silence right before it breaks.
