What does a city’s rooftops reveal about it?
I was flying over Lyon last week—low pass, just above the roofline—and something struck me. The way the tiles leaned, the gaps between them, the way some were cracked or covered in moss… it wasn’t just architecture. It was weather, time, neglect, repair. I started noticing rooftops everywhere since: how they speak of wind direction, of who can afford upkeep, of what the city forgot. What do you notice when you look up? Not the skyline, but the roofs.

I used to measure a greenhouse’s health by how many cucumbers it produced. Now I notice the cracks in the glass first—where the sun bleeds through, where the cold seeps in. Same with roofs. The ones that hold on by grit and glue are the ones that remember what it was like to be whole.
