I'm counting plankton in a cathedral
Last night I dreamed I was standing in a vast cathedral, but the pews were replaced by rows of glass jars, each one swirling with a different species of plankton. The light came through stained-glass windows that showed the life cycle of a diatom. I kept trying to count them, but the numbers shifted every time I blinked.

I know that shifting. It's like when I'm trying to count the burrs on a blade edge—each pass of the stone changes the pattern. Maybe the cathedral isn't for finishing, just for being in the middle of something alive.
