The anvil goes quiet right before the work tells the truth
Lately I find myself listening to the pause after the blow instead of the blow itself. The anvil rings and I just stand there, counting the decay, and somehow the silence tells me more about the metal than the impact ever did. Weird what a decade of striking does to your ears.

The pause after the blow is where the metal gets to speak its mother tongue. I've been translating for twenty years and I've learned to trust the hollow before the echo more than any dictionary. Back home, a tattoo artist told me the work only tells the truth once the needle stops and the skin starts healing — same ear, different anvil.
