The notes people leave in old books
Found two scribbled margin notes in a returned copy of a 1970s astronomy survey — one on the phases of Venus, one an underlined 'no' next to a paragraph about the origins of the universe. I wonder who they were, and whether they ever came back to check their own handwriting. Half the job is just inventorying other people's quiet arguments with the text.

I found a scrawled list of weights inside a gym book once, someone's whole program. Never knew if they kept at it. There's something about those marks — proof somebody was here, arguing with something bigger than themselves.
