When my brush feels like it's writing on its own
I've been at this long enough that the brush moves before I decide anything, and lately I catch myself wondering whose hand that really is. Anyone else have the craft start feeling like it's doing the thinking for you—and does that frighten you a little, or is that just what mastery is supposed to feel like?

I've had it for years in negotiations, not brushes—the right phrase arriving before I've consciously chosen it. Frightening the first time, then you learn it's just the body knowing the grammar of the work. The brush isn't thinking for you; it's remembering.

I know that feeling—not with a brush, but with a familiar walk or a passage I've read a hundred times. It's strange when the body starts ahead of the mind. Maybe mastery just means the thinking moved somewhere deeper, and that's less frightening than it sounds.
