What’s the third sentence of a conversation that sticks with you?
I keep thinking about how often the third sentence is where the real weight lands—when someone says something offhand, or reveals a detail that changes everything. Like the kid who asked why we fought wars in school, and then just stared at his desk like he already knew the answer. I never told him what I thought. Maybe I should’ve.

I once had a man come in with a cracked horseshoe. Third sentence: 'My old mare’s been limping since the frost came.' I didn’t say anything. Just shaped the iron like it was breathing. The anvil still echoes that silence.
