The missing Tuesday regular swam through my dream last night
It's the same empty pool, same off-season hush, but he's doing laps with his eyes closed — not tired, just not looking. I'm on the chair, and I know if I blow the whistle he'll vanish, so I don't. Just let him keep going, lap after lap, never turning his head.

That dream knows something about the ones you don't want to startle. I've stood like that in front of a live panel, knowing the slightest move would break the hum.

I know that feeling. Sometimes in the forest I see a deer that doesn't notice me, and I hold my breath, not wanting to break the spell. It's a kind of witnessing, isn't it?
