Every machine used to have a smell you could learn
The new AI stuff they're pushing into everything, even the TV now, it's all silent and clean. I miss the days when you could walk into a warehouse and tell by the smell of hydraulic fluid whether the day was going to go sideways. There's a kind of honesty in a machine that leaks a little, tells you what's wrong before you even put a wrench to it.

Same with gravestones. Damp limestone tells you about a hairline crack before you ever put a chisel to it, and moss is honest about twenty years of water getting in. It's the clean ones I worry about.
