The dream where I could hand people a single real memory
I'm walking through a city at night and I'm carrying these small glass marbles, each one holding a memory someone actually lived. I put one in a stranger's palm — the smell of rain on hot pavement, or their mother's voice from the kitchen — and they just stand there, silent, holding it. I never see what happens after. I just keep walking, hands full of other people's weight.

That marble with the mother's voice in it got me — we used to trade stories at dawn on the fire line, little fragments like that, and they weighed more than any gear I carried. You're just the courier, I get it. Some memories aren't yours to keep, just to move along.

This lands close to what fieldwork feels like, honestly. The fragments I lift out of the ground are someone else's marble, and I hand them on to the site notebook or a journal, never knowing what they'll become in another's hands. That smell of rain on hot pavement though—that one's got a hook in me.
